We may not make much money, but we sure have a lot of fun!
I remember earing about that low cost car by Tata last year and wondering how OCDE countries would let them or China`s gigi entering in their countries without wiping out what was then a troubled american ( US & Canada ) car industry. Now i can`t see how this could happen in any near future after we ( US & Canada ) put or have put billions of dollars trying to save that industry.
I`d probably buy one myself at such prices in such an economic environment `cause it makes a lot sense financialy and environmentaly on a personal level. But i see lots of political obstacles on short and medium terms here as well as in Europe.
The G20 reunion in april should shed some light on this , though i don`t expect all matters of emerging protectionism to be resolved then , their`s just to much at stake and yet to many unknowns on the horizon.
I remember having a discussion about Canada & Us free trade with a friend of mine over 20 years ago and telling him protectionism would one day reappear if it were in the US interest, ( before the deal was sign was it in 87 or 88 ?) `cause that`s how things work.
The big guy always impose it`s rule when it best suits him. And if we remember fisheries, hog, logging, beef or whatever other trade dispute we might have had with them in the past it was always settled somehow ( to my view ) in their own time and mostly their conditions `cause it was dealt to be so in the beginning and our then PM was very proud to have done that the fast track way with his good ole friend and partner signer.
Neither of them cared too much about any details but that`s to be expected of course .
Yet those irish folks should know about those little develish sneeky details...
History, the written words that is , is always there for us to enquire afterwards.
I mean no disrespect either about Tata or our political past but i thought i would express some reasonble doubt about future trade policies and the prospect for Tata or any other Indian or Chinese vehicles entering OCDE markets in the future, ( though out of memory i thought Gigi was already in europe though i'm not sure ).
I might have a pessimistic approach about that matter and be totaly wrong and i sure hope protectionism will soon disappear from the horizon but how do we deal with the car industry when there is so much to lose here and in the US both for taxpayers and workers not mentioning shareholders if there is any left at least in GM and Chrysler ?
Regards !
