Kind of interesting to see how others are reporting the story. One question: How do you calculate the value of a gold coin should you choose to spend it? Do you use the daily London fix? Somewhat impractical, no? Or do you use the face value, in which case I can't see anyone using gold coins as money since the face value on most is $50.
Also, there's the issue of legality. Only congress has the right to mint coins, no? Isn't that in the constitution somewhere? Not that anyone pays any attention to that nowadays...
Curious stuff.
