I actually just had it verified through a good source with lots of field experience that it is easy to identify pyrite and pyrrhotite visually.

He also suggested that it is not the absence of magnetite or pyrite that is important but the presence of sulphides that is important and identifiable in the core .

Apparently the weight of the core is very telling. Sulphides are a lot heavier than most other host materials.
