Ecuador: multinational IAMGOLD fights local fears over water quality

Canadian multinational company IAMGOLD has been carrying out mining exploration efforts in the sector of Quimsacocha. Local and nearby residents have become alarmed because to them this mining activity will carry a heavy environmental impact, especially upon regional water resources, which serve as a source of drinking water, irrigation and other activities.

On behalf of the affected communities, Gustavo Quezada, president of the Committee for Environmental Defense urges the revocation of the concession, which covers 9,250 hectares; the inclusion of the community in decision making processes; and the creation of a Oversight Group for the affected Tarqui river basin.

Quezada makes a call for transparency and openness with respect to the plans and work operations which the multinational company is carrying out, especially with respect to the mitigation plans and environmental management plans authorized.

According to Ross Gallinger, Vice President, Environment, Health, Safety and Community of IAMGOLD, the gold exploration project has had no significant impact on water quality to date and is operating in full compliance with Ecuador's laws and regulations. The company also has been conducting consultations and monitoring programs with residents and plans to continue the efforts as the project advances.
