Ecuador: Correa Fosters Energy Revolution

Quito, Apr 4 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa highlighted Friday the fostering of a revolution in the local energy sector, when he put the first stone for the construction of hydroelectric project Ocaña, in the Ecuadorian province of Cañar.

"Ocaña is a part of a group of projects that will heal that long historic disease that has characterized the Ecuadorian energy sector," the Ecuadorian President said.

He pointed the work will finish in 28 months at a cost of 55 million dollars, and the new generating plant will work for the generation of 26 Megawatts.

Correa will go to the territory of Azcuy, south of Ecuador, to attend a ceremony for the construction of another hydroelectric plant called Paute-Sopladora.

In his last radio appearance, Correa announced the beginning of a revolution in the energy sector with the construction of four generating plants: Sopladora (400 Megawatts of energy) Ocaña (26), Toachi-Pilatón (228) and Coca-Codo-Sinclair.

The hydroelectric projects, also, will substitute several thermoelectric plants that use crude oil for electricity generation, as well as to reduce the cost of taxes to the Ecuadorian consumers, he emphasized.
