I could be wrong but it seems to me he quit his little Grocery Store job as he was near to being a Millionaire and moved his family lock-stock and barrel to try his next fortune in the Singapore region.

He was a lovable character and maybe he got connected with Robert Friedland from Diamond Fields fame over there who is now part owner of Ivanhoe ... IVN.
