I decided to take a look into the political background in Ecuador, ( something I should have done before investing, ain't hindsight wonderful). It seems that constitutional reform i.e. changing constitutions, suspending constitutions, amending constitutions, re-instating constitutions is their standard operating procedure, modus operandi.
Since seceding from the Confederation of Gran Columbia in 1830 until 1852 there were no fewer than 5 separate constitutions. Constitutional change proceeded apace, in 1861, 1869, 1897, 1906 1929; 1945 was the countries 14th constitution so I've missed a few. They carried on, 1946, 1967, suspended in 1970, then a military coup in 1972 re-instated the 1945 constitution which was again suspended in 1974, a military junta in 1976 again re-instated the 1945 constitution, (they seem to have liked that one). the 1979 constitution was the countries 17th constitution and its 86th government in 150 years. I don't imagine things have changed ( no pun intended) much in the intervening years. I wonder what the 2010 constitution will be like.
