Please click on the above mentioned link to view a 16 minute video clip of Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa’s pro-mining speech to a few thousand miners and pro-mining supporters outside the Presidential Palace in Quito, Ecuador on May 6, 2008. The miners travelled to the Presidential Square from mining areas across the country. Many in attendance were from Corriente’s project area and travelled over 13 hours by bus to support the President and his vision for responsible mining. Introducing the President is Rubén Naichap, President of the Shuar Federation of Zamora Chinchipe, the majority indigenous people in the Corriente project area.
In the month since this speech, officials from the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum have been quoted in the Ecuadorian press that they are fast-tracking the new mining law for approval early this summer so that mining development activities can commence as soon as possible.
