A giant iron meteorite, first detected last year on a collision course with Earth, today impacted the planet in the Zamora-Chinchipe region of southern Ecuador. Initial reports indicate an impact crater approximately 5 km in diameter and 3 km deep, centered in the Fruta del Norte area, site of Ecuador's largest gold mine, Beryllium Resources. Company officials were unavailable for comment.
