The early Christians were eagerly awaiting Christ's second coming as he promised. They thought he would come during their lifetime. And because of that, Christians were not living their lives and just sitting around impatiently wating for Christ's return. James was admonishing them to get back to their lives and be patient knowing that Christ would return "but like a theif in the night" when no one will expect it.
