" During 2007, German chemical giant, BASF studied the viability of developing a composite container floor. No decision has yet been made whether to go ahead or not, although its exhaustive study is likely to conclude that demand for the product will exist. The question will remain however: how much are users prepared to pay for good alternative flooring? Another and more advanced composite floor option has been developed by Conforce International of Canada. The EKO-FLOR product was introduced at Intermodal 2006 in Hamburg. American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) approval was obtained in 2007, and this January comprehensive tests on a road trailer version of the floor were successfully concluded with ATC Houthandel, a major manufacturer of wood floors for trailers throughout Europe. Conforce president and CEO, Marino Kulas, tells Cargo Systems: "Over the past year the EKO-FLOR has been re-engineered because the original design was a little heavier than an Apitong floor. Now it is 10% lighter, and manufacturing facilities have been established near to Shanghai. "First year capacity is 200,000teu and there is planned expansion capability up to 2.5m teu after three years. Starting in February 2008, we have several hundred units going on test with a number of shipping lines." These tests are planned with a range of shortsea and deepsea operators and will continue for some months, and if they go well this could be the composite floor breakthrough that the industry has been waiting for."
