On a tangential note, as a Canadian I have the feeling that the US is in fact using the dispute settling mechanisms embedded in NAFTA to block Canadian exports to the States - I refer to wheat, beef and softwood lumber.
Now that we hear Obama and Clinton promising to force us to renegotiate NAFTA, presumably to the US' advantage, pipelines to the Pacific through BC take on a heightened significance. In a few years, the Vancouver line and the proposed Gateway pipeline to Prince Rupert will be able to ship a million barrels a day to the orient.
Don't get me wrong, I love the States and travel there on pleasure frequently, but your foreign relations policies might seem to some a trifle arrogant from time to time.
