I read the article and was struck by its making no reference to SAGD or other low invasive extraction methods. The article concentrated on the large strip mining projects and their detrimental impacts on the ecosphere. I suppose this made some sense to the authors in that the mining enterprises today are the dominant factor in oil sands production. I wish they had made some projection of how SAGD can produce bitumen with less impact.
