Actually, not so much - at least in China.
a car in China is typically a demonstration of earning power rather than a primary mode of transportation. At least in larger cities - where most of the cars are purchased - mass transport - notably subway - is the preferred means of getting about: convenient, cheap, comfortable. Most of the time the family car sits at home, a mute tstimony to the rise to financial success of the owner.
So - against intiuition - gas mileage does not have a huge impact on purchase intentions of Chinese car buyers.
Demand will continue to rise however. It is so great that the Shanghai authorities were forced to limit the number of new cars registered per month to around 30,000, or 360,000 annually. Repeat - this is the maximum number of NEW cars allowed on the road in Shanghai annually.
Note also that the population of Shanghai is 1% of China's population............
