New revenue record set as Alberta hits gusher from oil and gas land sales
By The Canadian Press
EDMONTON - A new record has been set for the sale of Alberta land that will be probed and prodded for oil and gas.
The final sale for 2010 on Wednesday generated $202 million, which pushed total yearly sales to almost $2.4 billion.
That beats the previous record of $1.83 billion set in 2005 and marks the first time the province has surpassed the $2-billion mark.
The province also set a new record for the average price per hectare, at almost $2,200.
Christine King, a spokeswoman for Alberta Energy, says changes to the province's royalty structure have allowed energy companies to proceed with new oil and gas exploration technology.
King also says land sales for the coming year look promising, as the latest quarterly estimate puts revenue at $2.1 billion. (CHED, CHQR)
