Was reading an article in the FP that with Keystone more or less cancel and the Northern Gateway now being targetted by the World Wide Funded Enviro Nazis that rail is now becoming a viable alternative. The article was saying that it would be much cheaper to expand the already existing rail system ( environmentalists can't stop an existing infastructure) to accomadate increased production. The article then went on to point out that rail has an advantage over a pipeline as the bitumen doesn't have to be diluted. So if raw bitumen could be shipped then production costs go way down for producers. If you ask me shipping by rail appears to be the way to go..You can double hull the tanker cars which would provide extra safety in case of a derailment..Even if a derailment occurs not all cars will break open and spill out thus reducing the environmental impact and allow a faster clean up.
