Although you cannot move the 5k worth of shares into you tfsa until 2012, you can still purchase your shares now. When the markets open in 2012, just transfer 5k worth of already purchased shares ( i am assuming in a cash account) into your tfsa. You would be charged $9.99 or whatever when you bought the shares but there is no charge for moving your shares from one account into your tfsa account.
