Tahltan Blockade Near Dease Lake
Friday, August 31, 2012 09:18 AM

Dease Lake, B.C. – Members of the Tahltan First Nation have set up a blockade to protest an open pit gold and copper mine in northwest B.C.
The group of elders and other concerned members of the First Nation have set up a blockade on Highway 37 at Tatogga Lake Resort approximately 80km south of Dease Lake. They allege construction of the Red Chris gold and copper mine will destroy the habitat of sheep, mountain goat, moose, and caribou which the Tahltan depend on for subsistence.
Adanza’a, a 73 year old great grandmother on the blockade, says she’s taking part to protect her homeland for her grandchildren.
“Our ancestors fought and died for our homeland to protect our way of life for us and the least we can do is fight for our rights and the rights of generations to come.”
The blockade members say they are handing out information and educating motorists travelling along Highway 37 about the issues facing the Tahltan and their homelands.
Red Chris, which is owned by Imperial Metals, received its Mines Act permit in May of this year.
The mine is expected to create 250 full-time jobs once expected construction starts in 2014.
