What slow down....?
Alec Kodatsky, analyst at CIBC, says that he is expecting copper imports into China despite a modest drop in August. Kodatsky notes that China imported 388,000 metric tons of copper and related products last month, which was a 6% decline compared to July. However, this was "firmly above the average monthly import levels of 350kt over the past two years,” he says. “SHFE/LME copper price spreads were mostly in the positive mid-single-cent territory in August/September. Together with low domestic inventories and loosening funding for importers, we expect imports to remain strong in the near term. SHFE inventories were at 152kt in early September, down 7%” month-over-month.
