I wrote to Carmax for confirmation, but haven't heard back.

It wouldn't automatically be a good thing if EE bought as well. It depends on where the shares came from. If they were existing shares we should ask who was willing to sell half of the company. If it was new shares then our recent purchase was just diluted by half.
