A couple of points re the issue.

It is indeed a sad and bad day for mining.

1. A PH of 8.5 is actually slightly alkaline, not acidic. A PH value of 7.0 is neutral, neither acidic nor alkaline; anything below 7 is acidic and anything above is alkaline.

2. I would imagine that most of the remediation and compensation costs would come from the insurance company; and depending on the final cost estimates, IM may be a good buy today for someone with a strong stomach!

Without knowing what is in the tailing and the geography in the vicinity and downstream; it's difficult to know what magnitude is the damage.
