What may have more direct impact on the future of SC is what will now happen to the Red Chris mine, this should be interesting to say the least.
Knight Piesold is saying that AMEC took over after they left. They were just making this up as they went along.
I don't understand how they can have the rigour of an environmental assessment and then once the mine gets going they just amend the plan on the fly, until the tailings pond didn't even look like the original anymore, or have the same integrity.
I'm with you--that CEO has to go. It appears that they were ramping up production to cover their costs over at Red Chris, because those costs had increased, while the price of metals was lowering their revenue over at Mount Polley. I think the idea of criminal charges is an excellent idea for the CEO. He has to take personal responsibility.
In a way part of the industry did self-regulate, if you consider Knight Piesold part of the industry. They were in charge of the oversight of the tailings pond and quit (in disgust?) Anyway, they did send a letter to the BC government warning them that things were not okay. Why didn't the government respond with a sense of urgency?
I hope that Red Chris will be isolated from Schaft Creek and not tied into this disaster. It looks like Imperial Metals was culpable of deliberate unsafe practices, and their Red Chris mine is located near the Sacred Headwaters so is already in a more sensitive enviornment.
