Newmont Mining rejected a roughly US$17.8 billion hostile bid from Barrick Gold and says it will proceed with a deal to buy Goldcorp. That would make the combined company the world’s biggest gold producer, surpassing Barrick, in a move it says would be better for shareholders. Newmont has also submitted a joint venture proposal to Barrick to combine operations in Nevada.
