Regarding the energy aspect of oil; there are a number of alternatives, all of them becoming increasingly competitive, especially if you take into account industry subsidies: there's wind, solar, geothermal, tidal, hydro, even nuclear although that last one is a debatable option. Not much in the way of substitutes for metals.
