jmo, but I think that they are divesting slowly from met coal because they really don't want to divest from met coal but they are now starting anyway because they know they have to change their image. They have committed to a shifting away from oil and coal (carbons) in favor of more base metals exposure to align better with drivers of the 'decarbonize and electrify everything' future. They want the capital markets in this increassingly ESG-consciencious world to take note.
If Teck demonstrates a relatively direct transfer of capital from a coal project to a copper project, they satisfy those investors looking for a company that is walking the walk. And Teck would accomplish some of this image evolution without a jolting and disruptive complete exit from a still quite lucrative coal business.
