There's no guarantee of a recession, of course (there's no guarantee of anything, other than death and taxes, as Ben Franklin once said). 

But you know that, historically speaking, oil price spikes commonly occur prior to a recession? And you also realize that soaring fuel prices have widespread inpacts that can tip off a downward spiral when affordability becomes a bigger issue for the lower and middle classes?
