  • As concerns about our oceans’ health continue to rise, mining companies around the world have developed a worrying glint in their eyes. While mining operations have already dug out billions of tons of minerals from dry land, the turn away from fossil fuels to renewables has started a new run on minerals like cobalt, copper, and lithium – all of which are plentiful beneath the waters of our oceans.
  • How plentiful? According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there are 21 billion tons of polymetallic nodules in one single region of the Pacific Ocean’s floor. The nodules of that single region contain more metals (including nickel and cobalt) than are available in all of the world’s dryland deposits. While the keys to a renewable energy-powered future might be waiting for us to dig out in the depths, environmental activists aren’t very enthusiastic about tapping into deep-sea resources. Mining operations will disrupt already-fragile ocean ecosystems that influence the biological health of the environment, even on dry land.
  • The oceans provide the world’s largest carbon sink, a significant portion of humanity’s food supply, and a massive amount of biodiversity. Massive mining operations in the deep ocean, one of the least-understood parts of Earth, could hold any number of untold negative impacts on our planet’s health. So far, many companies have bowed to environmental pressure, with the likes of BMW, Microsoft, and Google all pledging to not use deep sea metals, at least until the impacts of the mining operations are better known.
