2 things, TCM had indicated earlier of the 30+% of turnover which was unprescedented.
Secondly, there is so much work going on......
choices between Mt Milligan 21 days on, 7 off, dry camp, 1 hr 20 min from Fort St. James, almost 3 from PG, 3/4 of a mile from camp (walking) thru mainly mud, no women, no bars, 2 days to get tools, materials
vs
work near Fort McMisery, Regina, Edmonton, hell... even Kitimat where there is at least some infrastructure, similiar shift and overtime.
I know of a number of contractors that have open outside calls for personnel and internally within their orgs they are poaching personnel on Vancouver Island jobs for in the north and offering incentives just to people to go. Years ago when Syncrude UE was being built, in order to attract maintenance personnel, Syncrude was offering a bonus if you stayed five years equal to the taxes that you paid for all five years IE: 30k tax paid each year for five, equalled $150k bonus (taxable of course) It can only be getting worse due to the scarcity of personnel.
SK & AB already going full tilt, and the next wave will be peaking next year at Rocanville, Boundary Dam, Colonsay, Fort Mac etc.
