Didn't Venezuala recently repatriate a couple tonnes of its gold held off shore (Germany I think?).
This kind of thing is criminal in my mind. Unfortunately, there is no shortage of Latin American countries taking this tack. Nicaragua did it not terribly long ago. It was so controversial that the head of the national bank refused to sign off on the new currency issued and, to this day, their new bank notes show his name without a signature.
It really hits the poor folks who dont' have any avenue to mitigate the sudden loss of their purchasing power of any savings or wage. Meanwhile the elite rich have prepared safe havens for these events and wind up being richer relatively speaking and attain more real power within their own economies.
