Message: Article on Teck's Chairman, Dr. Norman B. Keevil

Ladies/gents:

...from a special supplement in Thursday's (May 16) Vancouver Sun - page E2. Thought you might want to know the background of the man who will, ultimately, decide our fate.

* * * * *

Dr. Norman B. Keevil just might have become a professor at Salt Lake City University after completing his Ph. D. at the University of California ( Berkeley) in 1963. He believes he “would have become a competent skier” had he accepted the position, but his father convinced him to return to Canada and join his mining company. Today, instead of being known as a professor and competent skier, his work in the mining industry has created a legacy of economic growth, job creation and community leadership.

Dr. Norman B. Keevil, O. B. C., Ph. D., LL. D. Chairman, Teck Resources Ltd.

Dr. Keevil joined Teck Corporation in 1963 as Vice President of Exploration. Seeing an opportunity to create a major mining company through new mine development and strategic acquisitions, Dr. Keevil helped to grow Teck into a world- class mining entity that now employs more than 12,000 people worldwide.

By “recognizing opportunities that are sitting there in other companies’ possession,” Dr. Keevil developed a strategy of “realizing potential” that would turn Teck into a mining giant that could see opportunity where others did not. It was largely because of Dr. Keevil that Teck turned from its focus on oil and gas exploration to mine finding.

Norman became Executive Vice President of Teck in 1968, President and Chief Execu-tive Officer in 1981, and Chairman and CEO in 2000. In August 2001, he became non-Executive Chairman of the merged Teck Cominco Limited. Today Teck Resources Ltd. is one of Canada’s oldest continuously operating resource companies and its growth over the past five decades is due in large part to Dr. Keevil’s efforts.

Over the years Norman has received a number of awards for his business achievements including being named Master Entrepreneur of the Year in 1996 and being inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame. Recently Dr. Keevil was inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame and has been awarded the Order of BC.

Norman’s contributions to organizations and causes are numerous, including provision of an earth science scholarship at the University of Western Ontario, and support of Vancouver General and BC Children’s Hospitals, the University of Alberta, and the Royal Ontario Museum.

Throughout his career, Norman has been an outspoken advocate for safer working conditions, sustainable practices, and inclusion of northern and native communities. He made a significant contribution to the development of the Mining Association of Canada’s Environmental Policy while serving as its Chairman.

In May 1993 Dr. Keevil received an Honourary Doctorate of Laws from the University of British Columbia. He is a Life Director of The Mining Association of Canada, and is a member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Dr. Keevil did not get his opportunity to become a competent skier, but he has been spotted working on his chip shot at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
