Condy answered questions about this at a press conference at Brasilia yesterday. An article in the L.A. Times today discusses the question at length and concludes with the following paragraph:

"I think Latin American leaders would be very cool to the idea, and would react very strongly, because of all of the political, security and economic implications," said Michael Shifter, an analyst with the Iter-American Dialogue, a Washing think tank. "The last thing that Lulu (Brazilian President) and Bachelet (Chilian President) want is more instability."

Hopefully GW can get the Columbian Trade Agreement through congress and provide positive support for Columbia.

I agree that this should not be a problem other than the Columbia situation taking Chavez time away from domestic issues.
