When people place "Market on open/close" orders either buys are sells these are matched against the ones on the opposite to hopefully get the sales at the market price.

 

If there are more sells or buys they will report an imbalance which has the tendency to push the price in one direction or the other on open/close.  It's basicall just a trading item that can move the price in one direction or they other on open/close.
