Candidate for mayor of Valencia was arrested
Saturday, November 15, 2008
Caracas .- Abdullah Makler, one of the opposition candidates for mayor of Valencia in the regional elections to be held within nine days in Venezuela, was arrested Friday in connection with a seizure of 400 kilos of cocaine, briefed the minister Interior Tareck The Aissami.

The drugs were seized in a candidate's brother's farm near Valencia, and in the operation were arrested a total of 10 people, said the minister.

"Abdullah Makler is already stopped and is the order of the Public Prosecutor (OTP). Whether anyone who participates in groups of mafia and drug trafficking will be brought to justice," said The Aissami to the press.

"This family has been reported for some time, this finding stems from intelligence investigations initiated some time ago. We can not say that (the seizure) of 400 kilos of cocaine is a fortuitous event," added to ensure that the procedure "was done in strict adherence to rules. "

According to the minister, near the farm was an airstrip with aircraft that were ready to take the drug on the night of Friday hidden in suitcases identified with the insignia of the Red Cross.

Makler Abdullah, who is close to the current governor of Carabobo state (center) Luis Felipe Acosta Carlez, a dissident Chavez, contained in the polls with around 15% support.

Currently, the minister noted, are in search of his brother Walid Makler, to apprehend. All detainees were placed in the order of the Attorney General's Office.

The candidate for mayor of Valencia Abdullah Makler, Makler of Walid brother, complained in the morning that the drugs were planted because the Prosecution has not achieved anything against him.

Similarly, during a press conference, clarified that the estate belongs to him and his brother, who had not finished paying, and inside it are hardly 150 cows.

Makler accused the candidate of the PSUV, Mario Silva, and some authorities have ordered the introduction of drugs on the property. (AFP / Globovision)

Venezuela (AP) — A senior Venezuelan official says a major opponent of President Hugo Chavez could soon be detained on corruption charges.

Vice President Ramon Carrizalez says Gov. Manuel Rosales could be detained after Nov. 23's mayoral and gubernatorial elections.

He says at that point authorities won't have to adhere to a special procedure for detaining top officials.

Rosales is the popular two-time governor of Zulia state. He's running for mayor of Venezuela's second largest city, Maracaibo.

Carrizalez said Saturday that "everything indicates" Rosales is preparing to flee to Miami.

Last month, Chavez threatened to make Rosales "a prisoner" for corruption and plotting his assassination. Rosales denies the charges
