Moody's cuts Ecuador's sovereign rating

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Moody's Investors Service on Friday downgraded Ecuador's sovereign ratings following the government's announcement that it may default on a $30 million coupon payment for its Global 2012 bonds. The agency said Ecuador has "ample liquidity" and the move by the goverment underscores its "poor willingness" to pay. "It seems that the government's stance towards bondholders is motivated by political and ideological factors, given the very small fiscal relief that a default would bring compared to the damage to the government's ability to access international markets," said Alessandra Alecci, a senior analyst at Moody's, in a statement. The country's B3 foreign currency government bond rating, B3 foreign currency bank deposit ceiling, and B3 foreign currency country bond ceiling were downgraded to Caa1, and have been placed on review for downgrade
