This article grossly misrepresents the political situation in Canada.
The conservatives under Harper were elected with a minority of parliamentary seats. It is accepted democratic practice that the other minority parties, which together have a majority of the parliamentary seats, may depose the governing minority party at any time, if they so choose, by uniting against it.
Canada has never been secure for hardcore conservatives. Harper was elected because canada wanted change after so many years of liberal government. This desire for change mostly resulted from a series of scandals and the perception that too many years in power had lead to corruption in the liberal ranks.
Canada may very well require some economic stimulus just like the U.S. The fact is that the majority of canadians are social democrats and they are not afraid to spend public funds during difficult periods to keep the economy rolling.
The suggestion that a liberal government would abandon NATO committments is simply ludicrous. Whether or not we continue to send soldiers to Afghanistan is a decision that will be made with the same level of thought, concern and consultation that will go into the U.S.'s decision about its own military presence in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The suggestion that Canada would become soft on terrorism under a liberal government is also ridiculous. Canada has received direct threats from Al qaeda and our security services remain fully alert and cooperate completely with those of our allies.
This article reads like it came out of the heart of the Canadian oil patch, which historically has been Canada's redneck central. There may be some fear there that a liberal government would take a hard look at the pollution nightmare that has resulted from rapid development of tha Alberta oilsands.
