The changes are from period upto 31 Dec so doesn't explain the sp jump in the new year.

Explanation seems straight forward... Shorts have to Buy to complete their transaction. Buying increases sp. Especially if the recent jumps in sp came as a surprise to shorts, forcing them to cover subsequently increasing sp during the pop. We might have seen a mini-short-squeeze. Interesting...
