I wouldn't assume that anyone is getting anything for free. Sure, some get better deals than others, but the company is getting something, even if it's hours worked or something else in an employment agreement. I'd bet that those with options took those options instead of a higher salary. This happens all the time and isn't necessarily aimed at helping out those in the good old boys club at our expense.
