The parliamentarian said there was not legal but political motives behind the decision to sentence Chancellor for seven years.

Pastora Medina lawmaker expressed his opposition to the decision to sentence by seven years the mayor of Sifontes, Carlos Chancellor. "There is no reason to blame, what you're being charged to Chancellor is his leadership and respect for community management," he said.

"There are powerful interests that want to Chancellor prisoner. Behind the decision is the governor, the mining transnational Crystallex and Marlene Vargas. According to Medina, there is no evidence to incriminate Chancellor, who is accused of violating public order while taking part in a demonstration by a group of miners who held claims with the mining company Crystallex in 2005.
