Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez told a local TV channel that his government may annul a number of gold-mining concessions. Last year the Venezuelan authorities stripped the US Gold Reserve Company of such a concession. Currently it is only two foreign companies that are engaged in mining gold in Venezuela, namely the Russian-Canadian Rusoro Company and the Cuban company Geominsal. The Rusoro Director-General Andrei Agapov told the Interfax news agency that the Venezuelan leader’s initiative has basically to do with 5,000 to 7,000 illegal gold-miners.
