Venezuela’s environment ministry (Minamb) will invest 10.4mn bolivares (US$4.02mn, officially) in efforts to clean up the Caroni river basin, a ministry official told BNamericas.
The project involves implementing a sustainable management system to protect natural resources in and around the basin, the official said.
The ministry will request a loan to finance the initiative, the official said, adding that the funding is expected to be obtained shortly.
The Caroni basin remediation project is part of the ministry’s 963mn-bolivar budget for development projects this year.
Other initiatives included in the budget are improvements to solid waste management, a national program to improve environmental conservation, expansion of urban and rural potable water and sanitation services, potable water systems for isolated rural communities, conservation of the Yacambu river and improvements to agriculture in the Quibor valley.
