"We've never had a chartered bank fail, thats not trying to brag"

If you cast our eyes back to 1929 (or thereabouts) you will find that the Home Bank failed and along about the same time Sir Henry Pellat who was a major force in the Home Bank went under financially as well. Sir Henry is remembered as the former owner of Casa Loma which he lost to the city of Toronto for $37,000.00 in unpaid property Taxes.

The failure of the home bank was such a scandal at the time that it resulted in changes to Canada's banking system.

Of course various Canadian banks in the meantime have gotten into various kinds of troubles and have found it best to sell to other Canadian banks rather than get into worse troubles; but I do not believe any have gone bust since the Home Bank.

If I remember properly Casa Loma cost $3 or $4 Million in 1920's dollars to build, and is now a tourist attraction.
