I'm still waiting for other translations to come in. In the meantime, let me hazard a guess about Chino/Khan and Chino/Chinese.

In the passage where Hugo discusses the value of Las Cristinas, Chino when uttered is always preceded with the article, the.

On page 59, Chino is never preceded by the article, the.

So it could be that Chino when used on page 59 refers to Jose. The value of Las Cristinas passage refers to the Chinese.
