Fidel Castro came to the defense of Chávez


Cuban leader Fidel Castro denounced an alleged conspiracy in Washington against President Hugo Chavez, who carried out would cause bloodshed in Venezuela. Castro commented on a meeting held this month at the U.S. Capitol, where lawmakers met with U.S. conservatives Venezuelan opposition leaders. "There was talk of overthrowing the governments of Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Nicaragua," said the Cuban leader in a usual op-ed published yesterday in the national media.

Chavez spoke to the National Assembly on the meeting of his opponents in Washington, so he asked a law that prohibits in Venezuela, civil society organizations and political parties from receiving U.S. funding.

According to Castro, what happened in Washington is more than "a slanderous media campaign" but rather "a conspiratorial activity that surely in Venezuela would lead to an inevitable bloodshed."

Castro and Chavez are political allies and personal friends.

According to the former president, Chavez's opponents want to interrupt the social process and tarnish his accomplishments leading to violent street clashes in Venezuela, spreading hatred and violence.
