CARACAS (Dow Jones)--A group of young Venezuelans of Egyptian descent attempted to take over the Egyptian embassy in Venezuela, though the dispute was ended quickly, President Hugo Chavez said Friday in a televised speech.

The group, which appeared to be acting in solidarity with widespread protests that have swept the Middle Eastern country in recent days, "entered peacefully like Egyptian citizens, as if they were going to ask for documents, but they ended up taking the embassy," Chavez said.

After being called by the embassy to settle the matter, Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro spoke to the leader of the group who then agreed to leave the building, Chavez said.

"This we can't permit," the president said, adding, "it's our obligation to protect the embassies."

"This is something that should not have happened, but [the protesters] wanted to express their position," he added.

When reached for comment, a worker at the embassy who declined to identify himself said "everything was calm and had returned to normal." He declined to give further details.
