(CNN) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez underwent surgery Friday in Cuba, a top official in Caracas said.
Chavez suffered from a pelvic abscess and results from the surgery were "satisfactory," Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro said.
Just as Chavez was recovering from an injury to his left knee, his doctors detected the abscess, Maduro said.
"This merited President Chavez's decision to immediately undergo corrective surgery," he said.
Chavez and his team were in Cuba for a series of meetings on cooperation for the economic development of their nations.
The operation happened Friday morning in Havana.
Chavez was "initiating a recuperation process in the company of his family, his medical team and part of his government team," Maduro said.
The Venezeulan president will remain in Cuba for a few more days before returning to his country.
