Venezuela is offering USD 1 billion to Exxon Mobil for the nationalization of the firm's assets in the country, said Minister of Energy and Petroleum Rafael Ramírez.
Although Solicitor General Carlos Escarrá said they were in talks with Exxon Mobil, Ramírez, who is also the president of state-run oil giant Pdvsa, told Reuters that he is not negotiating with Exxon Mobil out of the international arbitration courts.
The dispute between Exxon Mobil and Pdvsa has been one of the most hostile Venezuela has faced ever. In 2008, the US firm managed to temporarily freeze up to USD 12 billion in foreign assets held by the Venezuelan State, but a British court then dismissed the action.
