The Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Rafael Ramirez has raised concerns over an alleged international strategy to weaken and fragment the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The plot, according to Ramirez, is mainly led by the U.S., which seeks to satisfy its own energy needs at the expense of oil-rich countries.
For Ramirez the U.S. will probably make use of international arbitration to try to cut Venezuela's income and take hold of its assets. He also accuses the Venezuelan opposition of wanting to make the Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA disappear and thus be returned to the U.S. control.
The Minister estimates that Venezuela will have more than 300 years of continuous oil production thanks to the recovery of the Orinoco Oil Belt, previously in hands of foreign companies. On the other hand, the official United Socialist Party argues that the dictatorship that submits countries to subjugation and violence because they do not respond to the interests of the empire cannot continue to prevail.
Ramirez, who is also president of PDVSA, claims that since President Chavez took office in 2009, the revolutionary government has nationalized 204 oil companies and collected 295 billion dollars that otherwise would have ended up enriching the American economy.
The Minister of Energy and Petroleum has said the almost 100,000 workers of the Venezuelan oil industry stand by President Chavez and has called them to soon take to the streets to advocate for his re-election in 2012.
