Message: Chavez Back in Venezuela After Latest Round of Treatment in Cuba

Caracas,

April 27,2012

CARACAS – Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez returned to Caracas early Thursday after undergoing 11 days of radiation treatment in Cuba, officials said.

The president’s doctors prescribed the radiation therapy following the removal of a cancerous tumor in February.

Chavez arrived just after midnight at Maiquetia airport, Communications Minister Andres Izarra said in a Twitter posting that included a photograph.

“I am very happy to be here again, although I never really leave, but physically,” Chavez said in a short video clip broadcast by the official VTV network.

The president was wearing athletic clothing and spoke with some of his ministers at the airport.

Chavez, however, made no comments about his health or about the treatment he has been receiving since the Feb. 26 operation to remove the tumor.

The tumor was a recurrence of the cancer that Chavez underwent surgery for in June 2011.

Unlike on prior occasions, state television did not provide extensive live coverage of Chavez’s arrival.

VTV had broadcast a short video clip and photograph earlier of Chavez leaving Havana, where he was seen off at the airport by Cuban President Raul Castro.

Chavez had been in Cuba since April 14, where he has undergone several rounds of treatment for cancer.

The president underwent two rounds of radiation therapy on the island, completing the five weeks of treatment required at this time.

Chavez plans to remain in Caracas April 26-28 and then continue his therapy. EFE
