AFAIK, under the Venezuelan constitution, if Hugo dies before January 10, Maduro would finish Hugo's present term and after the 10th Diosdado Cabello takes over as president, and must call for a new election within 30 days.

If Chavez survives for his inauguration on the 10th (or whever they postpone it to) and they can somehow pull it off, and then Hugo dies, Maduro would take over and has to call for a new election in 30 days. It's all about jockeying for position within their party between Cabello and Maduro right now, unless and until the military intervenes. Otherwise 30 days or so after Hugo, there is a new presidential election.
