No doubt a balancing act when deciding who to send from the US. In the end, a few who had constructive meetings and dealings with Chavez were in attendence. And that was perfect. No riots and they made it out alive.

I don't think the US could risk sending someone whose presence might be construed as disrespectful or vengeful. We have a new relationship to forge with Chaves' successor. Hopefully it will be more productive than the last one.
